The
finished files of your book about to go into POD
production must meet a few technical conditions. All
these conditions and the options for the finished format
of the book are described in detail in the POD
Operating Manual, which you will receive after
registration. This section presents the basic technical
specifications along with recommendations for creating
the finished files.
For the manuscript, we recommend the editor Microsoft
Word 2000 or higher, which allows a quality final PDF
conversion. It is good for the technical specifications
of the PDF file to be also found in the Word document
created. To create the cover, we recommend the use of
Adobe Photoshop version 6.0 or higher.
Bookblock file specifications
Trim sizes (external dimensions): The accepted
trim sizes used on a large scale in standard books are
(in inches): 5 x 8; 5.5 x 8.5; 6 x 9; 6.14 x 9.21; 7 x
10; 8.25 x 11; 8.268 x 11.693. We recommend the 6 x 9 or
5 x 8 inch trim size for the books of 100 to 400 pages.
For color books, only the trim sizes 5.5 x 8.5; 7 x 10;
8 x 10; 8.5 x 8.5 and 8.5 x
11 inches will be accepted.
Margins: It is recommended that you provide a
minimum 0.50 inch margin on all four sides of your text
block. The document should be centered (left-to-right
and top-to-bottom).
Content structure:
The document must have a title page
(listing title and author)page 1 is recommended; a
copyright page (on which is printed the ISBN code,
standardized descriptions, contact data of the publisher
and/or author)page 2 recommended; a contents page
(optional in some literary genres)recommended
starting on page 3; and a reference page (optional in
some literary genres)last but one page recommended.
We also recommend starting each new chapter on an
odd-numbered page.
The total number of pages should be in
multiples of four, and the last page should not be
printed. If the document does not meet this condition,
it will be completed with blank pages until reaching the
first multiple of four.
Other requirements for the PDF file:
For standard black-and-white bookblocks:
All fonts should be embedded and must
include screen and printer versions.
The recommended font for the basic text
is 10 14 pt Times New Roman.
Pages must be numbered (except for page
1); we recommend the numbering be centered at the bottom
of the page.
Interior text should be submitted in
grayscale only (do not submit as CMYK or RGB).
Continuous tone photographs and artwork
should be 8-bit grayscale, at 300 dpi.
Line art should be 1-bit black and
white at 600 dpi.
Files should contain no crop marks,
bookmarks, or internal links.
PDF output resolution should be set to
600 dpi.
For
color bookblocks:
All fonts should be embedded and must
include screen and printer versions.
Pages must be numbered (except for page
1); we recommend the numbering be centered at the bottom
of the page.
Interior color content (color text,
images, graphics) must be submitted as CMYK. RGB is not
acceptable. Spot colors must be rendered as CMYK.
All color management settings must be
set to "Off". This includes the use of ICC
Profiles or any other management settings.
Line art should be 1-bit at 600 dpi.
Black-and-white images or
black-and-white text in a color bookblock must be
submitted as grayscale.
For saddle-stitched books, the page
image must be built to the gutter.
The file should contain no crop marks,
bookmarks, or internal links.
PDF output resolution should be set to
300 dpi.
We recommend to authors that the manuscript sent as a
proposal meet the technical requirements for finished
files as much as possible, so that further changes do
not affect initial formatting and pagination.
For the conversion from DOC to PDF, we recommend a
proper PDF printer driver or Acrobat Distiller. The PDF
generated through conversion must preserve the entire
formatting of the initial document, including
dimensions. If you use a professional version of Adobe
Acrobat to generate a PDF file, it should use the
default setting PDF/X-1a:2001.
Cover file specifications
If
you want to create the cover file on your own, you must
respect the following technical requirements:
Accepted format is TIFF or PDF for
black-and-white books and PDF for color books.
The image should represent the unfolded
cover at the real size (front cover + back cover +
spine); the sizes of this rectangle are those chosen for
the bookblock, plus the spine width added to the width
(spine width is calculated as function of the number of
pages and trim size). You must contact us for the spine
calculation after you create the bookblock file. For an
example of a cover scheme with dimensions for a standard
6 x 9 inch book, click here
.
All images or artwork should be
submitted in CMYK format at 300 dpi resolution.
Only four colors may be used in
standard book covers.
Black elements should not be built in
"Registration" black; these elements should be
built out of "Rich" black. For best results,
we recommend the following CMYK values: 60% Cyan, 40%
Magenta, 40% Yellow, and 100% Black; the CMYK total
value should not exceed 240%.
For best results, text should be at
least 0.125 inch (0.25 inch for color books) from the
trim edges of the book.
The virtual cover for an ebook should be a
JPEG file of 510 x 680 pixels, submitted in CMYK format.
