What does POD mean?
Print on demand is a publishing, printing,
and distribution system based on one-book-at-a-time
printing technology. The system has an integrated
information-based system that receives and distributes
digital content into a distribution network (aggregator,
distributors, wholesalers, retailers). See the section
titled What is POD.
Top
Can I publish any kind of book?
As an author, you may publish any literary
genre in any field, provided you agree to minimal
editorial requirements described in the section titled Author
guidelines. Top
Can I publish in any language?
Yes, you can publish in any language, in
English or your native language. POD distribution is
global, but you must be aware that titles in languages
of low worldwide circulation will have a smaller market
exposure than those in English, Spanish, or French.
Top
Can I publish a translation of another author’s work?
Yes, you can publish a translation as an
author or co-author, if the original author’s rights
to the work have entered the public domain in the
countries where the book is to be distributed as well as
in the country where the original work was published.
Where an author's rights are not in the public domain,
you still may publish the translation as a co-author as
result of a written agreement between you and the author
of the original work. See the section titled Publishing
translations. Top
How can I calculate the total cost of publishing my book?
POD publishing costs are much lower than for
traditional publishing because the investment in an
initial printed stock is waived. The total cost depends
on the book type and the number of pages as well as the
pre-press services selected. The median investment in a
new title setup is between 100 and 400 euros in our fee
schedule (compared
with a few thousands euros through a traditional
publisher), and these fees are unique (you pay once).
See the section titled Fees and compensation. Top
How much will it cost me to publish in ebook format?
Ebook title setup and publishing assumes
the following costs: ISBN assignment fee: 10 euros; plus
digital catalog fee: 12 euros yearly.
Top
So I pay the fees once and the book will be printed forever?
Yes, the setup fees for a new title are
paid only once (except for the annual digital catalog
fee), and the book is produced (printed on demand and
distributed) continually, as long as your publishing
contract is in effect. Top
Can I publish my book content through other publishers or in other
formats?
As an author, you keep all the intellectual
property rights to the materials proposed for
publishing. By signing the publishing contract, an
author cedes the author's rights to INFAROM Publishing
for the period of the contract on a nonexclusive basis.
Therefore, you may cede the content rights to any other
publisher during the period of the contract with INFAROM
and after its termination. Top
I have a book published. Can I publish that title in English through
INFAROM?
If you are under a contract with another
local publisher, you may translate and publish that
title in English through INFAROM only if your publishing
(cession) contract states that cession only of the
rights for the original language to the respective
publisher (you own the English rights).
Top
Who makes the formatting and editing of the interior?
It is author's job to put the initial
manuscript into finished form for publishing by creating
the final PDF file, according to the Technical specifications. You may choose to work
with a qualified person to edit the interior in
Microsoft Word or other software, or you may request the
PDF conversion from us. Top
Who makes the cover?
You may create the cover of the book
(either traditional or virtual) on your own, according
to the Technical specifications and book trim sizes if you
are competent in using a good software for editing
images, or you may work with a designer. You may also
request that we create the finished cover file.
Top
Can I insert color images in the interior of my book?
When you send the form with the final data
for the title, you must state whether it is a standard
(black and white) book or a color book. If the interior
contains color text or images, then it is considered a
color book, and its finished files must be created
according to the Technical specifications for color books.
Top
How do I send the materials?
In the first stage, you must send the
material proposed for publishing through the form on the
Submission page. After you
receive acceptance for publishing and you create the
finished files, they are sent through another form we
will provide you. Top
Who establishes the list price for a book?
The author establishes the list price for
his or her book. Still, we will suggest the list price
to the author, depending on the market position of the
title, content, number of pages, trim size, etc. These
suggestions will be provided to the author after we
review the initial material. Top
Where will the book be printed?
Our POD printing partner is in Tennessee in
the U.S. It has another branch in the U.K., where a POD
printing unit produces European orders.
Top
How long does it take until my book is released on the market?
From receipt of the finished files, it
takes about 10 to 15 days until the proof is generated,
and another 2 to 12 days until you receive the proof
(depending on your location). Then the book goes into
production in 1 to 3 days from proof acceptance. The
editorial information is spread progressively through
distributors' catalogues and the title appears on Amazon
in about 3 to 5 weeks. So, from the completion of
corrective verification (which can take from 3 to 30
days), your title appears on retailers' lists in a
maximum of two months. See the section titled Publishing
steps. Top
My book appeared on Amazon. Why are the cover image and description
missing?
Amazon’s website hosts over 3 million
titles (books and other products) and posts hundreds of
new entries daily. This is why the listing of a new
title is done progressively, according to Amazon’s
listing system and criteria. First the title appears
with its identification data, then the images and other
description data appear. Publishers may contribute to
the completion of the listings of their titles through a
separate system for sending data. Top
How much is the author compensation and how are payments made?
Generally, author compensation is 65% of
the net profit coming from the book sales. If a sale is
made through Ingram's distribution network, the net
profit is calculated by subtracting Ingram's 55%
discount from the list price, then subtracting the
printing costs from the remainder. If the sale is made
to a retailer, the calculation is the same, using the
retailer's discount instead of Ingram’s 55%. For
ebooks, the costs are null. See the section titled Fees
and compensation. Payments to authors
are made monthly, within 120 days following the end of
each month in which a sale occurs. Top
Is author's income subject to taxes?
According to the legislation of the
territory in which INFAROM operates its business, an
author's income represents income from intellectual
rights and is subject to a 10% tax, retained at the
payment source. Beyond this obligation, the author is
responsible for any tax liability incurred, based on the
tax legislation of his or her own country. See the
section titled Resources.
Top
Who distributes the book?
Global distribution is made by Ingram Book
Group, the world leader in book distribution. Other
major distributors such as Baker & Taylor, Gardners,
or Bertrams may stock and resell your titles.
Wholesalers and retailers order books through these
distributors. Books are also sold through affiliates of
online retailers (websites affiliated with Amazon or
Barnes & Noble). Besides global POD distribution,
direct orders may come from independent booksellers. The
distribution of the titles published under P.A.M.
imprint is made exclusively under author's management.
See the section titled Distribution/Marketing.
Top
Can I order copies to distribute on my own?
Of course you can. Through the direct
order service, authors may order any number of
copies of a published book at any time at the unit cost
price (printing plus shipping). Delivery is by post and
you may distribute the ordered books on your own.
Top
How can I influence the growth of sales?
You can run an online marketing campaign
independent of the publisher's. The aim is to make as
many references to your title as possible and to the
websites selling it. For this, you may use all the
posting means that the Internet offers: forums and
discussion groups specializing in a field related to
your title, reviews and comments on Amazon and other
specific websites, publishing articles, direct offers to
bookstores, and so on. See the section titled Resources.
Top
How can I make a change in the text of a book that has already been
published?
If you want to make a change in the
interior of your already published book, you must notify
us by email. Once we receive such notification, the
respective title will enter the revision process. This
means that you must create another PDF file of the
interior, then send it through a special form we provide
you. The new file will enter the same setup process as
for a new title and will be subject to the same
operations and turnaround times. Top
A reader posted a bad review on an important website. What can I do?
To counterbalance a bad comment or a low
rating, all you can do is post a positive one on the
same website. You can ask acquaintances of yours to post
positive reviews as well. Top
Can I change the list price of my book?
Yes, you may change the list price of your
book upon 45 days prior notice to us. This period is
necessary for effecting this change in the digital
catalogue and for the new price to spread into the
distribution network. Top
Can I change the title of my published book?
No, the book title cannot be changed after
setup. Such a change would require withdrawal of the
title from the digital catalogue and the setup of a new
title. Top
Can I withdraw a published book from the market?
Yes, you may withdraw your title from the
digital catalogue and production upon 30 days prior
notice to us. This period is necessary for effecting
this removal and notification of the operators from the
distribution network. Top How can we convince foreign publishers to publish the book in other
languages?
This marketing effort is justified only
when a title sells very well and this is observable on
the Internet. (No publishing house will translate a work
about which it is unsure there is market potential.) In
this case, the author and the publisher project a
campaign to offer the licensing of translations in other
languages, which targets publishers in other countries
as well as those in which the book is currently
distributed. With respect to this aim, the main
promotion and exposure means are book fairs at which
your title can be shown and proposed for translation.
Authors are asked to participate in the costs of such a
campaign. Top
For what period is the
publishing contract active?
The publishing contract is signed for an
open-ended period with the possibility of being
terminated by the will of one party upon 30 days prior
written notice. Top
